Requirements:

  • Exhibition works
  • Rebuild of 6 galleries
  • Close coordination with the chief curator for the National Portrait Gallery

Tate Britain required competent and skilled contractors to work alongside chief curator for the National Portrait Gallery, Alison Smith to create 6 refurbished galleries to exhibit the Edward Burne-Jones Pre-Raphaelite exhibition. This exhibition was Burne-Jones' first solo show at Tate since 1933. One of the last Pre-Raphaelites, Edward Burne-Jones brought imaginary worlds to life in awe-inspiring paintings, stained glass windows and tapestries. The exhibition has received glowing reviews throughout the national press.

The refurbishment required rebuilding different areas of the gallery and creating the space that was sympathetic to Burne-Jones' work.

 What did MCD Heritage do?

MCD Heritage have a long standing relationship with Tate Britain, and worked closely with curator, Alison Smith, to best achieve the spaces to show Burne-Jones work. This was achieved by removing some existing walls and rebuilding them, decorating all walls with specific paint, and sanding and sealing the floor. Plinths were created, showcases removed. Where necessary scaffolding and Genie lifts were used to access areas safely.

MCD Heritge worked skilfully with the art handler team to ensure that the galleries were ready in time.

Throughout the project, the team from MCD Heritage completed the following:

  • Decoration of 6 galleries, graphics panels
  • Removal of full height walls, showcases, plinths and Perspex hoods
  • Fabrication and installation of angled label holders
  • Installation of timber with Velcro strip for tapestry
  • Painting of all galleries and re-paint due to colour-matching

Results

The end result were high-quality refurbished galleries that provided a fitting setting for Burne-Jones' work to be displayed.
